Buried Cherry Bars


Ingredients
1 jar (10 ounces) maraschino cherries
1 package (about 18 ounces) devil’s food cake mix without pudding in the mix
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, melted
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1-1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
3/4 cup sweetened condensed milk
1/2 cup chopped pecans
   
1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease 13×9-inch baking pan. Drain maraschino cherries, reserving 2 tablespoons juice. Cut cherries into quarters.
2. Combine cake mix, butter, egg and almond extract in large bowl; blend well. (Batter will be very thick.) Stir in cherries. Spread batter in prepared pan.
3. Combine chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk in small saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until chocolate melts. Stir in reserved cherry juice. Spread chocolate mixture over cherries in pan; sprinkle with pecans.
4. Bake 35 minutes or until center is firm to the touch. Cool completely in pan on wire rack.
