American Flag Pizza

Ingredients
2 packages (about 14 ounces each) refrigerated pizza crust
2 cups prepared pizza sauce
1-1/3 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
12 cheese sticks or string cheese (about 1 ounce each), quartered lengthwise (48 pieces total)
25 pepperoni slices, quartered

1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Lightly coat two nonstick 17×11-inch baking sheets with nonstick cooking spray.
2. Unwrap pizza dough. Roll each one out onto a prepared baking sheet. Starting at center, press out dough with hands to edge of pans. Place on center oven rack; bake 8 minutes. Remove crusts, but leave oven on.
3. Spoon 1 cup pizza sauce on each crust. Using back of spoon, spread evenly over crusts. Sprinkle 2/3 cup Cheddar cheese on upper left quarter of each pizza. Arrange 24 cheese strips on each pizza to resemble stripes of the flag. Place some strips end to end, if necessary, to make stripes across the width of the crust. Place 50 pepperoni quarters on the cheddar cheese for stars.
4. Return one pizza to middle rack of oven; bake 8 minutes or until cheese is melted and edges are golden brown. (Do not overbake.) Remove from oven; set aside. Bake second pizza. To serve, slice each flag into 16 pieces when cooled enough to handle.

Note   For peak flavors, have the students help assemble the pizzas and bake on site, or refrigerate once baked and serve cool. This recipe does not stand up well to reheating in a microwave oven.
