Waffles are crisp quick breads with a unique honeycomb design of pockets and ridges. They require an appliance known as a waffle iron to make them. Waffles are prepared by pouring a batter similar to that used for pancakes onto one side of a very hot waffle iron and closing the second side over the batter. The waffle batter should be allowed to cook several minutes until crisp and brown. The cooking surfaces of a waffle iron impress the design into the waffle batter. Most often eaten for breakfast topped with syrup, waffles may also be served as dessert or topped with savory mixtures for an entrée. Dessert waffles are usually topped with ice cream, a sweet sauce or fruit. Entrée waffles are topped with creamy mixtures of meat and vegetables, such as creamed chicken and mushrooms. Belgian waffles have deeper, larger pockets and ridges; they require a Belgian waffle iron to make them. They are often topped with strawberries and whipped cream.
