Trifle is a layered dessert of English origin that has been on American menus since colonial times. A trifle begins with a layer of ladyfingers or sponge cake pieces that are sprinkled with sherry or another liquor, spread with jam and topped with custard. The layers are usually repeated. It is refrigerated for several hours before serving to allow the flavors to blend. Trifle is generally served in a glass bowl to display the layers. Just before serving, it is topped with whipped cream and garnished with fruit or nuts.
