Torte, the German word for cake, refers to a rich cakelike dessert made with butter, sugar, eggs and little or no flour. Bread crumbs or ground nuts are often substituted for most or all of the flour. Tortes are often made in bakeware with removable bottoms, such as spingform pans, for easier removal. Tortes come in single-layered or multilayered forms. Tortes made of multiple layers are filled with jam or whipped cream. One of the most well known tortes is the classic Sacher torte, a rich dessert of chocolate cake layers spread with apricot jam and topped with chocolate glaze. It was created in Vienna by Franz Sacher in the 1830's.
