Strudel, from the German word for whirlwind, is a pastry made with many layers of very thin pastry dough. The dough is rolled and stretched until it is paper thin, sometimes sprinkled with bread crumbs, spread with filling, and then rolled and baked. The traditional filling consists of apples and raisins, but other common fillings include cherries, ground poppy seeds and nuts as well as savory fillings, such as meat, cheese and vegetables.
