Pizza literally translated means "pie," but today it can refer to any of a wide variety of flat crusts with toppings. The "classic" American pizza usually is made with a thin, crisp crust or thick breadlike crust topped with seasoned tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and ingredients, such as Italian sausage, pepperoni, onions, mushrooms, green pepper and olives. Other convenient choices for pizza crusts are bagels, pita bread, English muffins and tortillas. Today's trendy toppings include goat cheese, duck sausage, artichokes and sun-dried tomatoes. Dessert pizzas are made with cookie dough crusts and topped with cream cheese or ice cream and fruit or candy toppings.
