A cookie with a crisp, yet chewy texture, a macaroon is traditionally made from egg whites and sugar that are flavored with ground almonds or almond paste. A variation with coconut substituted for almonds is almost more popular than the original. Chocolate and cherries are sometimes added to macaroons.
