A jelly roll is made from a thin, oblong cake, usually a sponge cake, that is spread with a thin layer of jelly or jam and then rolled. The log-shaped cake is traditionally dusted with powdered sugar. Other fillings, such as whipped cream and frosting, can be used in place of the jelly. The dessert is then referred to as a cake roll. It is finished with a thin glaze, frosting or whipped cream. The pan used to make the cake portion is called a jelly-roll pan (see Bakeware).
