Gooseberry

These small, tart round fruits, either green, white, red or yellow, look like small striated grapes. They are popular in Europe. The availability of fresh gooseberries is very limited in the United States, but they may sometimes be found at farmers' markets in the summer. Canned gooseberries also are available. They are best known for their use in gooseberry fool, an English dessert that combines cooked berries with whipped cream. They also make excellent pies and preserves.
