A glaze is a thin, shiny coating applied to the surface of certain foods, both sweet and savory. Baked ham may be glazed with a corn syrup or brown sugar mixture; a cake may be glazed with a thin coating of chocolate or melted preserves. Yeast breads may be glazed with an egg wash before baking.
