Food colorings are edible dyes, usually red, green, blue and yellow, used to tint frostings and candies. The most popular are liquid colors available at supermarkets. Paste colors, which are sold at specialty stores, come in a wider variety of colors and are well suited to foods that don't mix well with liquid. Both types impart intense color and should initially be used sparingly, a drop or two at a time. When stored tightly closed in a cool, dry place, liquid colors will last four years and paste colors will store indefinitely.
