A flan is a Spanish dessert in which custard is topped with caramel. The custard is baked in a dish that has first been coated with caramel. After baking, the flan is chilled. The custard is then inverted onto a serving plate. The caramel will be on top. The term flan also refers to a shallow French pastry tart with a sweet or savory filling.
