Doughnuts (also spelled "donuts") are individual cakelike pastries often in the shape of a ring. They are usually deep-fried but may be baked. Raised doughnuts are leavened with yeast; cake doughnuts are leavened with baking powder. Jelly doughnuts, also known as bismarcks, are round or rectangular without holes and filled with jelly. Crullers are two strips of doughnut dough twisted together before frying.
