To devil is to mix with hot seasonings, especially mustard, hot pepper sauce or ground red pepper, to create a deviled dish. The seasonings can be incorporated into a chopped or ground mixture, as in deviled eggs, deviled crab and deviled ham; or they can be applied to the surface of cooked meat, as in deviled short ribs.
