A compote is a combination of fruits, usually cooked in a light syrup, served for dessert or breakfast. The fruits may be fresh or dried. Although traditionally they are chilled, warm compotes are a welcome treat on cold winter days. The syrup, made with sugar and water or wine, is infused with spices, such as cinnamon, cloves, and possibly citrus rind. Liqueurs or brandy may be added.
