Chowder is a type of milk- or cream-based soup closely associated with New England. It is most often made with clams, but lobster and cod are other favored seafood ingredients. Regional variations also exist, using chicken, corn or vegetables, but a thick, creamy soup of clams, potatoes and onions is the most common.
