Chili, often called chile con carne (Spanish for "chili with meat"), can be traced back to San Antonio where these "bowls of red" were sold in the marketplace. A thick, stewlike dish, its main ingredients are cubed or coarsely ground beef and chili peppers or chili powder. The addition of beans can be highly controversial with chili aficionados. Whereas Texans generally do not add beans, others consider beans a necessity.
