Brownies are the popular all-American bar cookie. There is no accepted standard. The texture may be either moist and cakelike or dense, rich and fudgy. They may contain nuts and be covered with chocolate frosting. Varieties made with vanilla or butterscotch instead of chocolate are called blondies. Brownies are made in a pan and cut into squares or rectangles. They can be made from scratch or from a mix. Frozen brownies and bakery brownies are also available.
